A tree for the "Spatrzennest": LWB and Children's Association inaugurate another day care center

By planting a tree together, the Kindervereinigung Leipzig e.V. and the Leipziger Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft mbH (LWB) inaugurated a new day care centre in Watestraße in southern Leipzig on 21 May 2019. The non-profit association is the sponsor of the facility with 167 places, the city-owned housing company LWB is the building owner and invested more than three million euros in the building. This is LWB's third new daycare center after projects in Elsterstrasse (2016) and Brüderstrasse (2018).
"Our Spatzennest day care center has been filling up with children's laughter and experiences since the beginning of March," reports Christine Mühle, deputy head of the day care facilities of the Leipzig Children's Association. This is a somewhat larger new building to replace the site at Hans-Marchwitza-Strasse 10, which will be used by the Diakonie for the special school "Werner Vogel". "We are very happy that we were able to move into a new house very close to our former sparrow's nest. Our little apple tree, which we planted today with the children, is symbolic of taking root, of security and of fruits that we want to harvest together," said Mühle.

"The LWB not only rents and builds housing, but also supports the city in creating social infrastructure," said Iris Wolke-Haupt, LWB Director of Housing and Construction. "We are committed to creating living space." With new buildings such as the "Spatzennest" daycare center, the company contributes to the development of the surrounding area and increases the attractiveness of surrounding LWB neighborhoods.

"We have been continuously increasing investment in our portfolio for several years," said Ute Schäfer, LWB Director of Finance and Asset Management, at the official opening in Watestraße. "New daycare center buildings also benefit from this." So far, more than eight million euros have been spent on LWB day care centers.

The company is currently preparing to build three more daycare centers with about 400 places. In addition to the construction of new daycare centers, the LWB also supports childminders. Since 2004, more than 50 individual projects have been created in LWB homes. This is roughly equivalent to the capacity of two daycare centers. In addition, the LWB has leased land under leasehold contracts, on which a further 650 daycare places have been created.
