January 2021: The new building is completed

The new building was completed in time for the start of the year. Letting began in January 2021. The modern, centrally located 1- to 4-room apartments are attracting a great deal of interest. The first rental contract was signed within just a few days. One of the many benefits of the new LWB address is that there is a large bicycle shed in which tenants can protect their bicycles from the elements. There are also seating areas and a children's playground in the inner courtyard.

The remaining outdoor facilities will be completed in the coming weeks, weather permitting.

August 2020: Completion of the interior has begun

Little more than a year has passed since the first excavators started digging away on the building site and cranes were set up. The gap on Straße des 18. Oktober has now been closed. The last crane was dismantled straight after the topping-out ceremony in mid-May 2020; the symbolic act could only be held in front of a small crowd due to corona restrictions.
The residential construction looks like an ensemble of three buildings due to the different gable heights and designs. It’s still surrounded by scaffolding, which will be gradually removed in fall.
The interior part of the project is now in full swing as dry walls, insulation and screed are being installed throughout the building, and plumbers and electricians are also weaving their magic.

April 2020: Concreting work almost completed

Nine months after the start of construction, a large gap has closed. Three houses have been built on the site, which was previously used as a parking lot. While the last concreting work for a bicycle ramp is in progress in the basement, carpenters are working on the substructure for a sloping roof that will border on the neighboring gable. Inside the building, finishing work is being carried out to prepare for future installations. The first delivery of windows has arrived and will be installed these days.

September 2019: The first crane starts turning

Since the end of July, the LWB has been building on the property in Strasse des 18. Oktober. Excavators dig into the earth, a crane rotates: things are moving forward. This month the ground slab will be poured, setting a first milestone. Prior to this, a district heating pipeline (photo), which supplies the university hospital, among others, and which has literally cut through the property, had to be relocated. Once the floor slab is finished, the building can grow upwards.

More space in popular quarter

The LWB is already well represented in this popular area of the city. The new building, which visually complements the existing one, will create even more space for all generations. The Straße des 18. Oktober, which locals also call the Messemagistrale, is bordered by the Bayrischer Bahnhof and the Old Exhibition Grounds with many research facilities, the German National Library, shopping centres and leisure addresses. The university hospital is located in the immediate neighbourhood.

Some of the newly built apartments are subsidized with money from the Free State's program for the creation of rent-controlled housing. Prospective tenants need a certificate of eligibility for housing.
